Government of India nucleated a high priority planned project called "National Informatics Centre(NIC)" under the Electronics Commission/Department of Electronics during the year 1976 with a long term objective of introducing a system for the provision of computer based Informatics support to various level of Government, e.g. Ministries and all departments to assist in making decisions relating to economy, social development, rural development, planning and program implementation in the country. Since inception in 1997, NIC has set up a nation wide satellite based computer communication network, called "NICNET". Initially the above service was rendered to all ministries and Department of Govt. of India and the services have been extended to the State Governments and District Administration since 1985-86.

NIC, Darjeeling was set up on Aug'90. Initially it was at the Hill Affairs Branch Secretariat Building, but later on it was shifted to the Kutchery building and afterward a separate unit was set up in Siliguri. These centers provide service of application software, dial up email and internet connectivity through Direcway 4020 VSAT, website development for the state government as well as for the central government departments. Apart from the technical service and training, these centres also play an important role regarding implementation of E-Governance for the various departments.

Significant Achievement For NIC-Darjeeling


His Excellency, the Governor of West Bengal, used to officiate from Raj Bhavan, Darjeeling twice in a year, as Darjeeling is the second capital of the state of West Bengal. During the periodical visit of His Excellency, PCs, printers and all communication equipments are used to provide from this unit. Dial-up E-mail & internet connectivity are also used to provide temporarily during the above visits. In this act, one letter of appreciation was issued by His Excellency for the DIO, NIC, Darjeeling.
