King's minister's strong hold a Bhutanese word. It is also called Kalimpong in local dialect meaning "black spur". As per the Lepchas Kalimpong means 'Ridge Where we play'. It is said that these local tribesman used to organise field sports while not engaged in agricultural pursuit.

Situated at an altitude of 1250 meters it enjoys temperate climate throughout the year. Somewhat secluded and tucked away in the corner under the big Darjeeling umbrella, Kalimpong offers a quite and relaxed holiday against the backdrop of Kanchenjunga.

The journey from Darjeeling to Kalimpong is a beautiful experience. The road drops from Ghoom 7407ft., to Teesta Bazar 700 ft. in 12km and passes through lush green forests and tea gardens. One can stop at the view point of 'Lovers Meet' from where the confluence of river Teesta and Rangeet can be seen. One can travel direct to Siliguri from Kalimpong and this road follows the river Teesta from the hills till it emerges into the plains of Siliguri.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra which is 80kms from Kalimpong.

RAIL

The nearest railway stations are Siliguri Junction & New Jalpaiguri Railway Station.

ROAD

Kalimpong is connected to Darjeeling, Siliguri and Gangtok by road through buses, jeeps and private taxis.


Places of Interest

Dr. Graham’s Homes School

A unique educational institution started in 1900 by Dr. John Anderson Graham, a missionary with six orphans. The School, situated in a 500 acre estate on the slopes of Kalimpong’s highest hill, Delo, has today strength of well over 700 boys and girls, who are accommodated in small cottages in a picturesque setup. It has its own dairy, poultry and bakery. Every year in the month of May the school organizes “Mayfair”. A Day’s visit there can be enthralling.

Durpindara

It is the highest point in Kalimpong accessible by car. It offers a breath-taking view of the plains and the mighty Teesta.

Gouripur House

(New Co-operative Training institute) Situated about 2km from the town on the way to Durpin Dara. Gouripur House was one of the favourite haunts of poet Rabindranath Tagore. He stayed there on his many visits to Kalimpong.

Kalimpong Market

Your visit to Kalimpong won’t be complete unless you spend several or better still, several days at two Kalimpong bazars, one on the Main Road, the other near the 10th mile. It is unique experience to see villagers turning up in their local costume at the bazaars on weekly market days to sell their farm product.

Kalibari

Kalibari is about 2km from town Huge statue of Godess Kali is the main deity of this temple.

7th Mile View Point

3km from the town on the way to Teesta bazaar. A panoramic view of Teesta Rangeet Valley can be seen from here.

Flower Nurseries

Kalimpong is famous for its nurseries which export exotic flowers like Amaryllis Lilies, Anthuriums, Roses, Gerbera, Dahilias, Gladiolias as well as Orchids and Cacti. Some important nurseries are: Brindaban Garden Nursery, Ganesh Mani Pradhan Nursery, L.B.Pradhan Nursery, Pinewood Nursery, standard Nursery, Shangrila Garden Nursery, Twin Brothers Nursery, Universal Nursery and others.

Thongsha Gumpa

1km from town. Situated at the 10th mile this monastery of Bhutanese origin was built in the year 1630 and it is the oldest monastery in this region.

Tharpa Choling Monastery

It is situated at Tirpai Hill and built around 1937 belongs to Gelukpa Sect.

Mangal Dham

This recently constructed place of worship is marvelous piece of architecture.

Zong Dong Palri Fo-Brang Monastery

This is a fairly new monastery located in Durpin Dara. One can get a panoramic view of the town and surrounding from this monastery.

Golf Course

Located just beside Kalimpong Circuit House and it offers a fascinating view.

Pedong Monastry

26km from Kalimpong established in 1837.

Excursion and Picnic spots: Rissisum

20km from Kalimpong enroute to Lava and situated at an altitude of 6410ft., a glorious view of the mountains can be obtained from this point and it is also a beautiful picnic spot.

Lava

Situated 32 km from Kalimpong, a small town at the height of 6500 ft. rich in flora and fauna and suitable for natural excursions, bird watching and wild life. The department of forest has log huts and rest houses for the comfort of tourist and travelers.

Lolay Goan/ Kaffer

Situated at the height of 5200 ft. and 56 km from Kalimpong, rich in flora and fauna has dense virgin forest. The view of Kalimpong town from here is surperb. However the complete view of Kanchanjunga Range is best viewed from here.

Jhandidara

4 kms away from the village Kafer has aspectacular view of the Sun rise. The peck of Mount Everest is also seen from here. Heritage Forest Park, developed by Department of Forest is a major attractions here. The Department of Hotels have also come here.

Samthar

Situated at the height of 4500 ft. is a adventurous destination in the Tourism Map. One can trek to this destination from Sevoke, Kafer and Lava. The trek through the dense virgin forest, watching birds and wild life is spectacular. A Forest Resort recently developed by a private promoter is worth staying at.

Rishyap

Rated as the best and ultimate site in the kalimpong area, it is situated at the height of 8250 ft. About 10 kms away from lava and 28 kms away from Kalimpong. Jeepable roads reach until the last four Km(Up Hill), however electricity has not reached here giving it a medieval sort of charm. The local sherpas and Lepchas have built small cottage type tourist accommodation here. The Department of Tourism, DGHC is keenly promoting this area as a tourist destination. A magnificent view of Himalayas can be seen from here along with a view of the Nathula Pass, Tin Simana, Gangtok and Tibet Hills.
