Darjeeling, popularly known as “Queen of the Hills”, is a municipality town and a district headquarter in the Indian State of West Bengal, in eastern part of the country. It is located in the Lesser Himalayas at an elevation of 2,042 meters (6,700 ft). Darjeeling is worldwide famous for its Tea, its breathtaking panoramic view of majestic Mount Kangchenjunga (8,586 meters), the world’s third-highest mountain, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Darjeeling district has four sub-divisions,viz; Darjeeling Sadar, Kurseong, Mirik and Siliguri. Darjeeling Sadar , Kurseong and Mirik are located in the hills, whereas, Siliguri is in the plains at an elevation of 400mtrs only.
Kalimpong was a sub-division of Darjeeling District until 14th February, 2017, when it was formed as the 21st district of West Bengal.
